Drip and Micro-Irrigation for Florida Landscape Beds
Walk most Lakeland properties and you will find the same setup: the same pop-up spray heads watering the lawn are also watering the shrub beds, on the same schedule.
It is convenient for the installer and it is wrong for the plants.
Why spray heads are wrong for beds
- Turf and shrubs want opposite things. Turf wants frequent shallow-to-moderate watering across a broad area. Established shrubs want infrequent deep watering at the root zone. One schedule cannot serve both.
- Wet foliage causes disease. Spraying water over shrub leaves in Florida humidity is an invitation to fungal problems. Drip keeps foliage dry.
- Plants block the spray. As shrubs mature they intercept the water, so the plants behind them get nothing and the ones in front get soaked.
- Enormous waste. Spray in beds loses water to evaporation, wind drift, and application to mulch and hardscape where no plant benefits.
- Weeds love it. Broadcast water across a whole bed surface germinates every weed seed in it. Drip waters only where the plants are.
How drip and micro-irrigation work
Instead of throwing water through the air, these systems deliver it slowly at soil level.
- Inline drip tubing — flexible line with emitters built in at fixed spacing. The standard choice for mass plantings and groundcover beds.
- Point-source emitters — individual emitters on small tubes, run to specific plants. Right for widely spaced shrubs and specimen plants.
- Micro-sprays and bubblers — low-volume heads for dense beds and containers where a small wetted area is needed.
Water is applied slowly enough to soak in rather than run off, which suits our sandy soils and also works on the compacted areas where spray runs off entirely.
The benefits
- Substantially less water used, which matters under Polk County watering restrictions.
- Healthier plants. Deep root development, dry foliage, consistent moisture.
- Fewer weeds, because the bed surface between plants stays dry.
- Less disease pressure.
- Works in wind, unlike spray.
- No overspray onto walks, drives, windows or the street.
- Can run at any time of day, since there is no foliage-wetting concern.
Converting an existing system
This is a common retrofit and it is more straightforward than people expect. Typically:
- Cap the spray heads in the bed zone, or replace one with a conversion fitting.
- Install a drip zone kit — pressure regulator and filter, both essential.
- Run the distribution tubing through the bed, under the mulch.
- Place emitters or inline tubing at the plants.
- Flush the line, then cap the ends.
- Reprogram the controller — drip zones run much longer and much less often than spray zones.
The pressure regulator and filter are not optional. Drip systems operate at low pressure, typically 20 to 30 PSI, and municipal pressure will blow emitters off the line. The filter keeps particulates from clogging emitters, which is the number one drip failure mode.
Programming
The most common mistake after conversion is leaving the controller on the old schedule. A drip zone that ran 15 minutes as spray may need 45 to 60 minutes to deliver the same volume — but far less frequently.
Watch the plants for the first few weeks and adjust. Dig down after a cycle and check how deep the moisture has actually gone.
Maintenance
- Clean the filter on a schedule. This is the single most important task.
- Flush the lines a couple of times a year by removing the end caps and running the zone.
- Check for clogged emitters — a dying plant in an otherwise healthy bed is usually a blocked emitter, not a plant problem.
- Watch for rodent damage. Animals chew drip tubing looking for water, and the leak is invisible under mulch.
- Add emitters as plants grow — a shrub that has doubled in size needs more than one emitter.
- Protect the tubing from shovels and edgers during bed work.
Where drip is not the answer
Drip is for beds, not turf. Lawns need broad, even coverage that drip cannot practically provide at residential scale. Keep spray or rotor zones for turf and convert only the bed zones. Our irrigation maintenance guide covers the turf side.
