Live Oak Leaf Drop in Spring: Why It Happens and How to Handle It
People new to Central Florida are often surprised when the oaks start dropping leaves in February. Live oaks are not deciduous in the northern sense. They hold their leaves all winter and then shed the old ones in late winter and early spring as the new growth pushes them off, and for a few weeks a property under mature oaks is buried. It coincides with the oak pollen, and it is the messiest stretch of the year for any lot with big trees.
What the drop does to a property
- Smothers the lawn. A thick layer of oak leaves blocks light from grass that is just trying to green up, and a wet mat of leaves holds moisture against the turf and encourages fungus. A week is fine; a month is not.
- Fills the beds. Leaves collect in every bed and against every wall. In moderation they are useful mulch; in the amounts a mature oak produces they bury small plants and make beds look abandoned.
- Clogs gutters and drains. Oak leaves and the strings of pollen catkins that follow them block gutters, yard drains and pool skimmers. A blocked gutter dumps roof water beside the foundation, which becomes a drainage problem.
- Stains hard surfaces. Wet oak leaves and tannin left on pavers and concrete leave marks that take effort to remove.
Keeping up with it
The drop lasts a few weeks and the volume is highest in the middle of it. The mistake is waiting until it finishes and then facing one huge cleanup, by which point the lawn has been smothered for a month. What works is more frequent, lighter cleanups through the drop.
- Mow with a mulching deck over light layers. Shredded oak leaves disappear into the turf and feed the soil. This handles the early and late parts of the drop on most lawns.
- Blow and remove when the layer is too thick to shred. The peak week or two on a lot with several mature oaks produces more than any mower can process.
- Clear the beds and use a moderate layer of shredded leaves as mulch where it suits, removing the rest. Our post on mulch depth explains why more is not better.
- Clear gutters and yard drains at the end of the drop, once the catkins have come down as well.
- Hold off heavy fertilizer until the drop is done and the lawn is clear. Feeding a smothered lawn does nothing.
Is the tree healthy?
A live oak that drops its leaves in late winter and leafs out immediately is doing exactly what it should. A live oak that drops leaves in summer, drops them unevenly, or thins from the top without leafing back out is showing something else, and it is worth having looked at. Our oak care guide covers what healthy pruning and structure look like.
The pollen that follows
A week or two after the leaves, the oaks release their pollen and drop the catkins, the stringy tassels that cover cars, pool decks and lawns in a yellow-brown layer. The catkins mat in gutters worse than the leaves do and they are the last thing to clear before the spring cleanup is really finished. On lawns they can be mulched in with the mower once they are dry; on hard surfaces they need blowing off while dry, because wet catkins stick and stain. If a pool is involved, the skimmer basket needs emptying daily through this stretch.
What we do
For properties under heavy canopy we step up visits through the drop, mulch what can be mulched and remove the rest, and clear the beds so the spring color has a chance. If you are on a biweekly schedule, this is the one time of year it is worth going weekly. Request an estimate, or see our Lakeland service area page, where the old neighborhoods around the lakes get the heaviest drop in our area.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why are my oaks dropping leaves in spring?+
Live oaks shed old leaves in late winter and early spring as new growth pushes them off. It is normal and lasts a few weeks. Leaf drop in summer, or thinning from the top without new growth, is a different matter and worth checking.
Can I leave oak leaves on the lawn?+
A light layer, shredded by a mulching mower, yes. A thick wet mat smothers grass that is trying to green up and encourages fungus. The peak of the drop on a lot with mature oaks needs removing.
Are oak leaves good mulch?+
Shredded, in a moderate layer, yes. Whole leaves mat and shed water, and a mature oak produces far more than any bed should take. Use some and remove the rest.
