Reclaimed Water for Irrigation in Central Florida: What to Know
Many newer Polk County neighbourhoods are served with reclaimed water for irrigation, delivered through the distinctive purple pipes and heads. It is treated wastewater, safe for landscape use, and it is a genuinely good thing for Florida's water supply.
It also has real effects on your lawn and plants that most homeowners are never told about.
The advantages
- It costs less than potable water, often substantially.

- It contains nutrients — nitrogen and phosphorus survive treatment, so you are fertilizing lightly every time you irrigate.
The nutrient effect
That last point cuts both ways.
Reclaimed water carries measurable nitrogen and phosphorus. Over a season of regular irrigation that adds up to a meaningful fertilizer contribution, and it is why lawns on reclaimed sometimes look surprisingly green with little feeding.
The practical implication: you should be fertilizing less. Applying a full conventional program on top of nutrient-bearing irrigation over-feeds the lawn, which produces soft growth, more disease, more thatch, more mowing, and nutrient runoff into the watershed.
Adjust the standard Florida fertilization schedule downward and watch how the lawn responds rather than following a fixed calendar.
Salt is the main concern
Reclaimed water typically has higher dissolved salts than potable water. In Florida's sandy soils with abundant rainfall this is usually manageable, because rain leaches salts down through the profile.
Where it becomes a problem:
- During the dry season, when there is no rain to flush accumulated salts.
- In poorly drained areas where water does not move down through the soil.
- In containers and raised beds, where salts concentrate quickly.
- On salt-sensitive plants.
Symptoms of salt stress include leaf tip and margin burn, stunted growth, and a general decline that does not respond to feeding or watering. It can look like drought stress even in well-watered plants.
Managing salt
- Water deeply. Deep irrigation pushes salts below the root zone; light frequent watering concentrates them there. This is another argument for the deep-and-infrequent approach we recommend generally.
- Let rain do the work — do not irrigate during our rainy season when nature is flushing the profile for free.

Plant selection
Generally salt tolerant and well suited to reclaimed: most warm-season turf including St. Augustine and Bermuda, sabal palm, live oak, oleander, muhly grass, coontie, saw palmetto, Indian hawthorn, juniper, yaupon holly.
More sensitive, worth siting carefully: azaleas, gardenias, hibiscus, some citrus, ferns, hydrangeas and many tender ornamentals.
If you are planning a new bed on a reclaimed-water property, this is worth factoring in at the design stage rather than discovering it two years later.
Practical rules for reclaimed systems
- Do not drink it and do not connect it to any potable fixture. The purple pipe convention exists for exactly this reason.
- Do not use it for washing cars, pets, hands or play equipment.
- Avoid overspray onto patios, play areas, windows and vegetable gardens.
- Follow your utility's rules for edible gardens — most permit irrigation of crops that are cooked or that grow well above ground, with restrictions on anything eaten raw at ground level.

Clogging and filtration
The particulate load in reclaimed water is the reason drip and micro-irrigation on reclaimed need better filtration than they would on potable. If you are converting beds to drip on a reclaimed system, spend the extra on the filter and clean it more often.
